According to Automobile, as recently as this past Summer, BMW was working with McLaren on producing a BMW version of the next-gen McLaren Super Series model.
The BMW version would have seen the Super Series model wrapped in BMW bodywork and interior, with bespoke cylinder heads for the V8 engine part of the hybrid powertrain.
BMW M head Frank Van Meel even spent considerable time this Summer working in Woking (McLaren headquarters) on this tie-up.
The plans are have now been shelved, however. As a senior BMW manager explained: “It’s a great piece of kit.”
“But we came to the conclusion that it is the wrong car for these fast moving times.”
Reportedly, BMW will go it alone with a car that’s more highly advanced in terms of the electrification of its powertrain.
