[dropcap]E[/dropcap]lectric cars: the Government of Croatia is planning to restore subsidies for the purchase of electric car as of the year 2018.
In 2014 and 2015, Croatia subsidized the purchase of both electric and hybrid cars, with a total of 6.6 million Euros for the purchase of 1,428 cars and investing another 4 million Euros in infrastructure.
The government expects to allocate 11 million euros for subsidizing electric cars, while according to various sources hybrid cars will not be included.
According to data from the Croatian Center for Vehicles (CVH), 1,843 hybrid cars were registered in the country in 2016 along with 224 solely electric vehicles and 445 electric mopeds and bicycles.
During the conference Effects of Technology on the Development of Mobility organized by the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), participants warned that there are still challenges present in Croatia that are preventing a significant rise in electric cars.
Several political challenges and infrastructure challenges among them.
However, Croatia seems to be ahead of Kosovo, Albania or Macedonia in terms of electric cars, as none of the respective governments of these countries have made any indication to subsidize or invest in infrastructure for EV cars.
Although it’s worth mentioning that Albania has put some efforts in this direction, since Tirana has purchased a while back a dozen of EV cars for the Police units of the city, and it has also revealed plans to bring electric buses.
