Exercise gadgets haven’t been exactly elegant accessories, but changes are on the way. Earlier this year Apple announced a new feature to your Apple Watch: the GymKit.
Apple is making its smartwatch one step closer to omnipresent. The Apple Watch is now enabled to connect with gym equipment more accurately track your work out.
Essentially the GymKit connects your Apple Watch to gym devices such as treadmills, bikes, steppers and elliptical trainers. The novelty here is that this new connection improves the quality of health data collected by your health apps.
The new feature has already had its premiere in Australia and had already arrived in the US. Technogym is the launch partner, though more companies will follow soon. Unfortunately, for now, only a few places are enabled to use it, due to the expanses of replacing gym equipment. But we expect this start to quicken its pace rapidly since equipment makers have already signed on to Apple’s platform. And it’s not limited just to the newest machines, around three-quarters of Technogym’s existing equipment can be simply upgraded to work with GymKit.
Equipment manufacturers seem eager to embrace the tech in an attempt to offer up the latest and greatest to gyms. How long it will take to circulate is another question entirely.
Also, recently, skiers and snowboarders can use Apple Watch Series 3 to track their activities via new updates to apps available in the App Store. Watch users can now record runs, see vertical descent and other stats, and contribute active calorie measurements directly to the Apple Watch Activity app.
Security is paramount to Apple, so it’s no surprise that the company has taken pains to ensure that the data remains entirely private and, as soon as you step off the machine, it’s wiped entirely.
