An Orlando man sustained only minor injuries when a large piece of scrap metal crushed his van after falling from an overturned truck on a highway overpass Saturday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
A Mack truck hauling scrap metal was heading westbound on the State Road 528 exit to Interstate 4 about 7:35 a.m. when the driver, 33-year-old Antonio Santiago Wharton, lost control of the truck, which struck the guardrail and overturned, troopers said.
As the truck overturned, part of its load — a large metal cylinder — fell from the overpass crushing the van below, said FHP Sgt. Kim Montes
The driver of the 2003 Pontiac van, 36-year-old Jesus Armando Escobar, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
Wharton, of Kissimmee, who sustained minor injuries from the accident, was ticketed for careless driving, according to troopers.
Troopers say the ramp from westbound State Road 528 to westbound I-4 will be closed for several hours as the debris is cleared from the road.
